Jayport Farms has been breeding standardbreds since the late 1970s. Shortly after establishing the farm, Jayport Farms purchased a Caleb trotting mare by the name of Willow Brook Vicki.
Her 1983 mating with first crop stallion Worthy Bowl produced the 1985 CTA Two-Year-Old Trotting Colt of the Year, Jayport Worthy Vic – a winner of 10 of 13 starts and nearly $100,000. ‘Vic’ went on to race against and defeat horses like No Sex Please, Cosmic Storm, K M Lazer before retiring in 1993 with a mark of 1:57.1 at Greenwood and over $553,000 in purses. He is the sixth highest earning offspring of Worthy Bowl.
Three years after Vic was born, a return to the Super Bowl line with Vicki produced Yankee Predator horse Jayport Raider. Raider raced against the likes of Ride The Wave, Defrocked and Farrals Bullet, and earned over $100,000 in 28 lifetime starts before being exported for racehorse and stud duty in Europe in 1990.
The legacy of Vicki lives on through one of Canada’s most prolific trotters of the past decade, as she is the fourth dam of former World Record holder, double millionaire and multiple stakes winner Abbey Road C.
Two new mares took over from Vicki during the 1990s as the cornerstones of Jayport Farms’ breeding operation. A private purchase of Worthy Bowl mare Promus paid dividends as she became a solid producer. Her first foal, Jayport Go Lee earned over $168,000 in a predominently small-track racing campaign. More recently, Jayport Express and Jayporthasitall have notched wins on Canada’s top circuit – Express still competing at the age of nine with over $340,000 earned and Hasitall now exported to Sweden and in the stable of top Swedish horsemen Olle and Bjorn Goop.
The exploits of Jayport Express allowed for investment into the industry, giving Jayport Farms the opportunity to purchase shares in Mr Lavec and Kadabra. On the broodmare side, Kash Echo was purchased in foal to Dream Vacation in the fall of 2003. That foal was Jayportcashforlife, Jayport Farms’ first Grand Circuit winner. ‘Cash’ won a division of the Champlain at 2 and banked nearly $90,000 in her rookie campaign. Later that year, Cash’s older sister Susies Magic defeated Passionate Glide and Pure Ivory in the Breeders Crown final. Susies Magic went on to a successful aged campaign with multiple stakes wins, a mark of 1:52.4 and over $743,000 banked.
Homebred Jayport Ellie May, from the family of Breeders Crown winner and divisional winner as three-year-old trotting colt of the year Esquire Spur, has foaled two extremely talented full sisters. Jayport Sweetheart was the 2007 Grand River Raceway Distaff Trotter of the Year after a dominant campaign over the half-miler, following that up with a track record performance in 2008. Jayport Forever is also a 2:00 performer over Grand River and is close to $100,000 in lifetime earnings.
